I can barely get my husband to eat well, he will not eat vegetables, his salads are 1/3 of a bottle of dressing, and all he wants is red meat and potatoes. He’ll occasionally concede to pork or chicken happily, but only if it’s wrapped in bacon. Now I’m not saying that’s all we eat, but he would be happy if it was. So lately I have been trying hard to cut out as much harmful stuff as he will allow.
So while on Pinterest the other night, I made a happy discovery. Mixes! So I will be making my own mixed as much as possible in the foreseeable future and will keep you updated. But for now I have started with just one mix. In my house, Mexican food and anything spicy is great. We eat a lot of it. It’s one of my favorite foods. So today I tackled Homemade Taco Seasoning.
While I found the idea of homemade taco seasoning on Pinterest, I found that each recipe I looked at was missing something. And some were for single uses. Call me lazy (I call it smart), I would rather make a big batch and use as needed rather than get every single bottle out every time. So I have compiled my own recipe to make a big batch, and to include all the great spices used in Mexican food.
Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe
- 1 cup minced dried onion
- 1/3 cup garlic powder
- 1/3 cup cumin
- 3 Tbls oregano
- 2 Tbls salt
- 3-4 Tbls red pepper flakes
- 2 Tbls cayenne pepper
- 2 Tbls paprika
**If you don’t like things as spicy, use less red pepper flakes.
Use 2-3 tablespoons of mix to one pound of meat. If using a leaner meat, add a little water to desired consistency.
Will I use that much Homemade Taco Seasoning?
Some of you may think you will never use that much homemade taco seasoning. Well you may not but I sure do. We have beef tacos 2-3 times a month. There is also a few recipes that call for taco seasoning and now I can omit the extra preservatives and msg from those recipes as well. (Crockpot Taco Soup)
The Wheels in My Brain are a Turning
This light bulb going off in me has peaked my curiosity and got my excited. I’m already looking into what other mixes I can make. My mom (the greatest chef ever!) said she makes homemade enchilada sauce, there’s muffin mixes, and so much more. I can’t wait to explore this new (to me) road of cooking.
Have fun cooking, Tarrah
